YouTube officially drops IE6 support

Starting next month, YouTube will officially stop supporting Internet Explorer 6. Ars Technica found this info in the help section of YouTube under a link about older browser support.

What does non-supported broswer mean? Well, firstly surfers using IE6 won't be able to use all of the features available through YouTube. Secondly, if someone is using an older browswer, YouTube will give them a nudge to upgrade their browswer to something like Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or even IE8.

Google has already started fading out support for Google Docs as well as other Google Apps for IE6. Because of all the security issues, instability and incompatibility, the internet and even some governments have united against this browser.

If it were up to me, I would ban Internet Explorer in every form.

Sled Shred has arrived, brings Jamaicans with it

The game everyone in the amateur sledding community has been waiting for, Sled Shred, has arrived today by way of SouthPeak Games.  Firstly, the wildly popular, internationally renowned Gameshoe Podcast made an error when discussing this game.  Due to a lack of knowledge about the game, we assumed that it was a snowmobiling game, as "sled" is slang for snowmobile.  This turned out to be false.  The game is actually what it sounds like, a downhill sledding game.  While this may not sound awesome, the game features the Jamaican Bobsled team (who are sadly absent from the Olympics this year) as trainers for the player.  And if that doesn't get you excited, then maybe the use of the balance board as a steering method will.  Look for Sled Shred on the Wii, if you're in to that sort of thing.

First person shooter fans, rejoice! During the ceremony, former Lifetime Achievement Award winner Will Wright will then present the award to Carmack.

FFVII Remake? Kitase says "only if it can be done in 1 year"

With Final Fantasy XIII just around the corner you would think people would forget about FFVII. But alas, fans are still demanding a remake of the classic, thirteen-year-old j-rpg.

In a recent interview with TechDigest, Kitase, the director of FFVII and the producer of FFXIII said:

“If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we'd very much like a go at it! But even Final Fantasy XIII has taken over three and a half years to create. If we were to recreate Final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we'd imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together! So it's looking pretty unrealistic! But if any such situation came about by any remote chance, then yes, we'd do it!”

So it seems there is a very tiny chance that at some point in the future, if someone ponies up some dough, we might just see a remake… but I wouldn’t hold my breath…. Oh well, I guess I’ll spend my energy looking forward to the newest installment in the FF series.

Valve wants to make games for PS3 (someday)

For those who don't know, Sony and Valve aren't the best of friends. After the release of a bug-ridden PS3 port of The Orange Box, Valve has been reluctant to release any of its products on the console. Although, that may change in the coming months.

Valve writer Chet Faliszek recently told Edge magazine that "Before we do anything on the PS3 we need to be able to support it in the right way," Faliszek says. "But we'll look at it, and I'm sure down the road we'll do it."

Given the fact that Valve has released two titles in the Left 4 Dead series in a span of a year, it would seem plausible that the company would find time to release titles on Sony's console. Only time will tell.

Editorial: Sony's patent for "Universal" game controller

U.S. Patent: 0100041480
Although appearing yesterday for the first time, Sony's patent for a  "Universal" game controller was filed back in 2008. The idea behind it is explained in the text of the patent.

"Just like remote controls, game consoles, and thus game controllers, are becoming widespread. It is not surprising to find more than one game consoles in a household, especially when competing game console manufacturers attempt to attract unconventional consumer groups in the gaming industry. As understood herein, it would be useful to have a universal controller that would be able to work with a variety of game consoles."

It seems the device would be touch sensitive and change depending on which console you are using it with. (If you are using it with an Xbox 360 it would bring up that control scheme. A PS3 would be a different scheme etc..) Also there would be plenty of room for emulation of classic console control schemes such as NES or Atari 2600. It will even have speaker and rumble capabilities.

Will Sony acutally produce thist thing? In my opinion, probably not. It's just a patent and it might even exist for the sole purpose of making sure someone else doesn't come up with it. Also, by the time touch sensitive technology works well enough to allow this type of controller to exist, it will  be outdated. Look at the direction that console controllers are heading in (Natal, SMC). Their respective technologies are too divergent to create any sort of universal experience.

This patent represents a dream, and perhaps a good one, but I don't think this controller will ever see realization.

So, this is what Final Fantasy XIII on the 360 looks like.

A lot of gamers seem to be quite vocal on Final Fantasy XIII's multi-platform status. For those who don't know, two years ago, Square-Enix announced that the PS3's exclusivity of the Final Fantasy series was done. Instead, the multi-platform stage would be shared with the Xbox 360. This caused message boards to erupt, and 360 owners to rejoice. PS3 owners, to this day, hoped the shock wouldn't burden them for too long.

Well, guess what? The arguments may never end, because we now know what the 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII looks like. Judging from the screenshots released by Square-Enix, the 360 version of FF XIII seems lacking a few polygons and textures that are present in the PS3 version. Don't get me wrong, these aren't atrocious, but this is rarity between a PS3 and 360 title. Many gamers may have a different opinion, but these screens could create both debate and excitement among the community awaiting for Square's latest RPG epic to hit store shelves.

Hit the jump to see the screens.
