Introduction: This is my first review applying my review rubric, which I have constructed as a means of making my score-based reviews more transparent and, over time, consistent. The rubric is broken down into several categories to cover major areas of a given game and is posted near the end of the review article before the final score is given.

Disclosure: Alex contributed $20 to the game’s Kickstarter campaign last year.

I awaken in a snowbound forest. Okay, I think to myself. It’s a survival game. I need to find shelter, find wood, find food. I look around. I’m surrounded by trees. Nothing but trees. No shelter. Shit. I begin walking, resisting the temptation to sprint as I trudge slowly through the snow. I’m in a gully or small valley of some kind; I follow the contours of the terrain for a few minutes. I still don’t see a shelter. Shit. I’m walking between snowy rocks, I still haven’t found a shelter, and somewhere in the distance a wolf begins to howl. Shit.

I’m going to preface this with a couple of disclaimers. One, this isn’t a review of the Sims 4. It’s an opinion piece about the direction EA/Maxis has decided to take the series. I would also like to admit that over the course of my life, I have spent an exorbitant amount of money on Sims games. From The Sims 1 through The Sims 3 I have owned every expansion pack possible, all of the Sims 2 Stuff Packs, and a handful of the overpriced Sims 3 Stuff Packs. I’ve even bought items from the Sims Store, which is an embarrassingly obvious cash-grab. Suffice to say I love the Sims and have given a disgusting amount of money to this franchise.

In episode 1 of my series on what it's like to play games as a father with very little time on his hands, we talk about my experiences trapped in a hospital with no WiFi for a few days, and review the free to play mobile games I had to use to keep myself occupied.

Most of them sucked, hear more about how they sucked after the break.

Nidhogg is an indie game from developer Mark Essen, known as "Messhoff".  It is a side scrolling sword fighting game where you and a friend (or the increasingly competent computer) battle it out to be eaten by a giant worm beast.

Yup.

NHL 15 Review

NHL 15 is like a really nice house that you’re only allowed to put six pieces of furniture in.  It’s all well and good if you only REALLY use the bed, a chair, and a table, but if you have all sorts of guests over all the time, it gets really inconvenient.  Plus, even if you only use those three pieces of furniture, the rest of your huge house feels like it’s going to waste.

I swear I’m not crazy.  I’ll explain after the break.

We're Back

It's been over two years, but we're back.  Well, I am.

An indeterminate number of people are back.

I'm changing the focus of the website from news to editorials and reviews.  There are a couple reasons for this.  Firstly, that basic facts of the industry are so much easier to find, and a small site like this will probably never be the primary source anyone consults to get news about release dates and developer shake ups.  A small site like this is frequented primarily for editorial content and a specific voice, which is much more at home in opinion pieces and reviews.  So that is what this site is about.  And for the eight people that will ever read it, I hope you enjoy it.

Sincerely,

Alexander J Deckard
Editor in Chief
