Nintendo reports record-breaking day-one U.S. launch for the 3DS

We all know that the 3DS is a sexy-looking device, but alas, its shortcomings (battery life, launch lineup, etc.) made buying the handheld at launch unlikely for us at Gameshoe. With that aside, it didn’t stop hundreds of thousands of gamers from lining up in droves last Sunday to get their hands on the latest Nintendo handheld. The U.S. launch resulted in the 3DS to post the highest numbers of any Nintendo handheld in history, as so the Japanese publisher claims. The exact numbers from the U.S. launch were not mentioned in the report, as the company was willing to wait until NPD publicly released them in the following weeks.

In addition to the sales mark, it has been reported that several users have been experiencing crashes with the 3DS. Nintendo later issued a statement claiming, “there are no widespread issues.” In time, a firmware update may soon be implemented if the issue persists. Now, how about fixing the 3DS' battery life issue?

Hit the jump to see the full statement from Nintendo.

This week, the guys have been pared down to Kyle Buck, Alex Deckard and Harry Milfeld.  Also, for our iTunes listeners, I guess it's like a bonus, as the Podcast last week didn't post.  Terribly sorry.  We won't let it happen again.  For now though, listen and be amazed as the guys discuss the 3DS launch lineup and other such wonderfulness, as well as the joys of mobile gaming.  Please stand clear of the closing doors on The Gameshoe Podcast!

Resident Evil 4 and Code Veronica HD ports to be made available as downloads in North America

Split-comparison of RE4 of old and RE4 HD
High-definition ports of older console titles have become the norm this generation, but more and more are beginning to appear as downloadable titles. To continue with this trend, Capcom announced that the North American release of Resident Evil: Revival Selection will be available on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN, instead of a bundled release (re: Japan). This collection will include both the award-winning (and the heavily ported) Resident Evil 4 and the widely popular Code Veronica. The idea of releasing both of these Resident Evil titles as downloadable titles makes for a great convenience. It would allow Capcom to cut down production costs from bundling them as a physical release; plus, there’s a possibility both will be offered at a cheap price online. So, it’s win-win for all.

Capcom did not state any further information regarding what extras the collection will include, nor a solid release date, but one can expect a plethora of achievements and trophies one to obsess over. Until then, does this mean a possible HD revival of more Resident Evil games of years past? One can only hope.

Duke Nukem Forever Delayed; Millions Stunned By Unprecedented Announcement

In what is being called the most shocking announcement of the decade, Duke Nukem Forever has been delayed until June 14th, with an international release of June 10th.  Why is the game being delayed?  I don't know, maybe the ghost of George Broussard's Career is haunting the Gearbox office.  Maybe Randy Pitchford was tired of being talked about favorably.  Maybe the game actually doesn't exist.  Personally, I think the more important question is this:  Why is the international release before the North American release?  It's not like Gearbox is a European company.  Duke's not a massive Swedish hero.  He's as American as apple pie with anabolic steroids in it.  Oh well, I guess all us Duke Nukem fans will get back to doing what we do best.  Waiting.

With the huge success that comes from anything BioWare touches, Dragon Age II is a tiny bit of a disappointment to some players. The Internet has been blowing up with mixed reviews of the fantasy RPG, but it simply doesn’t meet up to some players’ expectations. Let’s try to get the pros and cons out of the way so we can go back to playing the game like the nice little gamers we should be and stop dwelling on disagreements.

The first Nintendo 3DS commercial for North America has arrived

With two weeks remaining until the Nintendo 3DS launches in North America, one would expect an onslaught of marketing dedicated to the device. We waited and waited, until yesterday, when Nintendo released a 30-second TV spot for the 3DS; the television spot for the handheld is also the first to hit North America. The commercial showcases the glasses-free 3D effects of the device alongside some footage of launch titles, such as Steel Diver and Street Fighter IV (complete with Ryu’s trademark Hadouken for good measure). In addition, we are shown the possibilities with the 3DS’ use of augmented-reality-specific games. So, in many ways, the first 3DS commercial in North America is as short as it is sweet.

Also, for those who have finally decided to plop down their cash for the 3DS, I suggest start saving those pennies…and fast. Happy pre-ordering.

Rumor Mill: Nintendo announcing Wii 2 at E3?

Get them rumors and allegations ready ladies and gentlemen, it's your weekly dose of Gameshoe rumor mongering.

So incase you haven't heard, Nintedo's sales of their money printing machine are starting to fall, which some thought would never happen. Seeing as how the 3DS is just on the horizon, and we all know that Nintendo has a thing for making a splash, could another console be coming?

The Wii as we know it launched in 2006 which if we waited until November of this year would give it a 5 year life span, which about fits Nintendo's cycle. And why not announce a new hot console and give a release date for this holiday season so people can get a Wii 2 and a 3DS for christmas?

I smell something here and I think that it's Nintendo's impending profit margins. If they announce another Wii with another innovation, that puts them way ahead of Microsoft and Sony as far as their console cycles go. Lets just hope it has HD graphics this time.

Or did MLG get a Sony sponsorship? Either way, the Xperia Play is now the official phone of Major League Gaming. The lineup for the Play at the moment is a tad slim but it's nice to see the way things are going, this will be some much needed exposure for Android in their quest for world domination.

Next season of MLG starts on April 1 in Dallas and if you want to get a look at the Play, make sure to look up some dates and times for the MLG events, there will be plenty of the Android packed phones floating around after this announcement.

At Nintendo's keynote during GDC yesterday, they dropped a bombshell on everyone. Their new handheld, the 3DS will be able to do Netflix streaming.

Just about everything hooked up to the internet can run Instant Watch now but this was still a bit of a shocker, due out on March 27th the 3DS will be the next in line. But sadly the Netflix integration won't go live until this summer. That just means get your instant queue ready for then!
