As mentioned a few weeks back, Donkey Kong extraordinaire, Steve Wiebe, has made many attempts to break rival Billy Mitchel's high score on the classic arcade game. His attempts have been documented on live television and he has developed a huge fan following for him to conquer his rival's record.
Well, sad to say Team Wiebe members, but a new champion, not named Wiebe or Mitchel, has been crowned. Hank Chien of New York, NY, broke Mitchel's record with a score of 1,061,700 in 2 hours, 35 minutes, crowning him the new DK champion. Yes, as baffling as that score sounds, Chien was able to avoid the game's dreaded "kill screen" from thwarting his attempt. The final score was verified by Twin Galaxies officials David Nelson and Eric Akeson.
Chien stated in an interview that he plans to take his skills onto another arcade cabinet, but he's mum about which title. This man has certainly earned both respect and envy among the classic arcade game world, but who knows if Mr. Wiebe will make an attempt to break the record. Let the battle for DK dominance begin!
