Trouble has been brewing up at Infinity Ward today, as Activision announced that studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella have been let go from the company. According to reports from IGN 360 and Kotaku, both West and Zampella were in private meetings with Activision yesterday. The meetings were reported to be about breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior executives at Activision Blizzard Inc. Activision did not state whether or not this was related to West or Zampella during Monday's regulatory meetings; however, the filing said that the company expected the departure of "key personnel" as a result.
For the time being, Steve Pierce, an Activision Publishing executive, and chief technology officer, Steve Ackrich, will lead Infinity Ward. The news of West and Zampella's departure comes hours after Activision announced that a new Call of Duty will be developed by a newly-formed developer, Sledgehammer Games. No word yet on whether this new developer will take over Infinity Ward's duties on the next title in the Modern Warfare storyline.
