It's been a short while since the world has seen a standalone Mortal Kombat game. Now, the wait is over. Hot off the heels of a seven minute long MK: Rebirth movie trailer (one that we're not sure means a new movie is coming out or not), Warner Brothers Interactive has announced Mortal Kombat 9 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 for release in 2011. The major catch: it will be played in 2D. MK creator Ed Boon will oversee the project, which is set to include online play, "tag-team" option that supports up to four players, a deep (and that's saying a lot for a MK title) storyline, and brand new graphics engine. Boon will also be helping with MK's new developer, NeitherRealm Studios. The trailer showcases classic MK characters such as Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Lui Kang and even overlord Shao Kahn.
