The big news coming from Nintendo yesterday was the announcement of a new handheld, the 3DS. We’re excited, but what do competitors think? News brief to Sony: time to start hyping your next handheld!

Now hear me out, we know it’s plausible that Sony has been working on a PSP successor for some time, but the fact of the matter is this: they’re not too keen on a 3D handheld, but they’ll stick to a 3D home console.

Hit the jump to read Sony’s comments on the 3DS.

"Our focus on 3D right now is on the console," Sony Computer Entertainment of America's John Koller told website IGN. "There's a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we're going to concentrate our efforts there."

Koller also thinks that it’s an interesting move on Nintendo’s part, but he would like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. “Eight and nine year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”

Do I sense a burn at Nintendo, even though they haven’t unveiled the device? I guess Koller doesn’t know that what little we know about Nintendo’s DS successor. Only time will tell, folks.
