P.S. Sorry about the iTunes trouble, it's been a major headache for us too!

The big news coming from Nintendo yesterday was the announcement of a new handheld, the 3DS. We’re excited, but what do competitors think? News brief to Sony: time to start hyping your next handheld!

Now hear me out, we know it’s plausible that Sony has been working on a PSP successor for some time, but the fact of the matter is this: they’re not too keen on a 3D handheld, but they’ll stick to a 3D home console.

Hit the jump to read Sony’s comments on the 3DS.

Could this be a glimpse of how the 3DS works?

Okay, I'm confused as the next gamer out there as to how the 3DS will work. The inclusion of an accelerometer and high-resolution screens are great, but the device is still a head-scratcher. The use of 3D gameplay is a risk on Nintendo's part, but that didn't stop them from introducing motion controls to gamers and non-gamers alike. Maybe the big reveal at E3 will answer all these questions. Until then, here's a clip of a Japan-only DSi-Ware title called, 3D Hidden Picture. The game uses the DSi's camera to sense movement, thus being able to tilt the background. Intriguing, I must say. Enjoy!

Hot off the heels with the release of the DSi XL, Nintendo has announced that they will reveal their next handheld, the 3DS, at E3 2010. This comes as not-so-shocking news, because Nintendo has hinted at a DS successor for many months; the question was whether or not it would be vastly different from their current handheld. The use of 3D with the DS successor has come as a shock, but Nintendo expects gamers to get excited once the big reveal approaches. Surprisingly, the 3D graphics implanted in the 3DS will not require the use of 3D glasses.

Hit the jump for more information regarding Nintendo's surprise announcement.

Sony has confirmed the existence of a Killzone 3 project.  Yes, that’s right, Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America has confirmed in an interview that Killzone 3 is in development.  He wouldn’t tell exactly when it was going to be discussed in detail, but he did say that he had good news for gamers at E3.  He was also clear on his opinion that his E3 announcements would be even better than this little blurb here.  Better than Killzone 3?  Probably something to keep your eyes on.

Michael Atkinson resigns, Australian gamers rejoice

Australia may be getting Mature rated games soon.  South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson has stepped down from his position, opening the door for a more open-minded replacement.  Michael Atkinson has been instrumental in the continued inability of Australians to purchase games deemed inappropriate for those fifteen and under.  His resignation comes after a slew of controversial actions, from being the only opposition to an 18+ rating, to claiming that his opponents were quoting fake people.  Problematically, these people turned out to exist, lending credence to the theory that liberal Australians are magic Shamen who can make people out of clay.  Here’s hoping the South Australians can elect someone less radical!

WarioWare D.I.Y. tutorial. DS owners will be microgame engineers

Nintendo Life recently posted two WarioWare D.I.Y. tutorial videos on their site. The videos showcase a how-to guide of what goes into making a microgame. With some patience, you'll be making microgames in no time. You can watch the second tutorial video here. Considering how it has been eons since I last played a WarioWare title, I'll have to admit, the options in this game have me excited. There's hope for me to create the most absurd microgame ever. Nintendo will wish that they didn't give gamers limitless options.

Pikmin 3 is in development says Miyamoto

Famed game designer and creator of all-things Mario and Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto, offered a brief Pikmin update today in London. Miyamoto, who was receiving his BAFTA fellowship award, mentioned that the third game in the series, which originated on the Gamecube, is "well under way." Albeit, this was a mere tease, Miyamoto states he wasn't bluffing.

This comes as no surprise, as Nintendo has hinted that a third Pikmin title was very likely for release on the Wii. Year after year, fans are disappointed of Pikmin 3's absence at E3's of the past, but maybe this June we'll have concrete evidence of its existence. Hopefully, the world of gaming will be able to embrace Captain Olimar and friends this coming year.

Free Stuff: Mass Effect 2 Firewalker Pack

Bioware releases yet another free content pack for gamers who purchased a new copy Mass Effect 2. This Tuesday (March 23) the Firewalker pack will be availalbe to download via the Cerberus Network. The pack will include the Hammerhead hover-tank and five all new missions.

It seems like Bioware is really trying to show gamers that buying a game new, although it costs a few dollars more, allows the developer to offer more content to the consumer. When someone buys a used game, the developer doesn't see any of that money. I'm not going to lie and say that I've never purchased a used title, but with incentives such as these, it makes spending that extra five bucks for the new copy a lot easier.

(Note: BioWare will release its first paid DLC on April 6. They have not yet announced a price.)

God of War copyright claim dispute gets thrown out

In a lawsuit filed back in 2008, Johathan Bissoon-Dath and Jennifer B. Dath of Davis, California claimed that God of War designer David Jaffe stole their original copyrighted material for use in the God of War series.

The plaintiffs cite specific examples from their work including two original screenplays based on Greek mythology where a mortal human goes on a quest on behalf of a Greek God. Other similar plot points include a fight with the god Ares and interaction with the god Athena.

Judge Marlyn Hall Patel dismissed the copyright claim on the grounds that the specific plot material is unrelated.

"No one can own the basic idea for a story. General plot ideas are not protected by copyright law; they remain forever the common property of artistic mankind," the court decided.

Considering this "general plot idea" was the grounds for one of the best action games ever; I'd chalk it up as a win for gamers as well as David Jaffe and SCEA.
