Final Fantasy 13 DLC gets the Axe

Need some more Final Fantasy 13 to hold you over until the next iteration in one of the most beloved sagas in video gaming? Well you may not be in luck because all signs are pointing to the previously promised downloadable content for the very liner based game getting left out.

A lot of fans of the series felt cramped by FF13’s storyline that didn’t really let players explore until near the mid-point of the game so most breathed a sigh of relief when they heard that the game would be supported by DLC down the road.

On December 17, 2009 the director of the game, Motomu Toriyama wrote on the game’s website “The world of Final Fantasy XIII is starting from here on out.” A little bit of a stretch but gamers are a hopeful bunch right? He went on to say that players who held onto their copies of the game would receive “good things.”

Well the world turns and in a recent interview with a Japanese game magazine Toriyama said, “We had plans for DLC, but those plans disappeared. Apologies!”

This ontop of the fact that Square Enix also came out and said there was enough of FF13 left on the cutting room floor to make another game in of itself must have frustrated more than a few fans out there. Looks like Square is moving on with the Final Fantasy train and hoping that people will meet them at the next gate.

Lead Relic Games Designer Dies Tragically While Saving Wife and Child

Lead Designer on Company of Heroes Online Brian R. Wood was tragically killed in a traffic accident last Friday. There was evidence of drug use in the vehicle that killed Brian. On the bright side, he was able to sacrifice his own life to save the lives of his wife and his unborn child. Instead of the car being hit full on, he was able to position the car so he would take the blow. “… (Brian) braked really hard and turned right so that he would be put in the path of the SUV and not me and the baby, and that is the only thing that saved us both.” His wife only suffered a non-life threating head injury, and the baby is still on its way to being born somewhere around November 5th. The surviving family is not mad at the seemingly intoxicated drivers, only saddened by the event as a whole. Personally, I love the Company of Heroes series. Both single player and multiplayer modes are near to perfection as RTS games come. His is a soul that will truly be missed, hopefully remembered by gamers around the world. The newest release from his team was Company of Heroes Online, which is free to U.S players who register online.

The King Is Back, Baby.

Well ladies and gentlemen, it happened.  It actually happened.  I truly cannot believe my eyes.  Duke Nukem Forever is actually being released.  Gearbox and Take-Two are releasing this game, long the stuff of legend, next year.  There's no concrete release date yet, but Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced it at the Penny Arcade Expo hours ago.  Players were allowed to play through two full levels of the game, and general consensus is that Duke is, indeed, the King, baby.

So dust off your Ray-Bans, light up your cigar, and don't forget to overdose on testosterone, Duke Nukem is, at long last, back in town.

US Military Stops Sales of "Medal of Honor" on Military Bases

The US Military has put a stop to all advertising and soliciting of Medal of Honor at Gamestop locations on Military bases due to the inclusion of playable Taliban forces. Confused patrons who called their local Gamestop locations were told this was “out of respect for our past and present men and women in Uniform”. This was a part of a letter sent to all Gamestops near any Military bases. The Agency responsible for this ban is known as the AAFES which controls all retailers within base locations. Gamestop has noted that they “fully support the AAFES in this endeavor and is sensitive to the fact that in Multiplayer mode one side will assume the role of Taliban forces.” EA has offered no further response to the matter, however stating they’ve already made a comment on their overall attitude to such a situation. Medal of Honor is published by EA and developed by Danger Close and DICE, both who are owned by EA.

PS3 Move Better Than Wii: World Not Suprised

The Playstation Move will be coming out this fall, and the guys at IGN got a first hand look at the "Wands of Win". The Playstation Move will come with Sports Champion, Sony's retort to Wii Sports. But the true difference is not in the launch titles between Sony and Nintendo, but in the hardware. The Wii mote, while innovative when it came out, has shown that while it is fun to toy with, as an actual gameplay interface it is sadly lacking. The Move improves on the Wii, and the end result is the closest one to one ratio that any hardware thus far could possibly achieve. It remains to be seen just how well Sony will incorporate this new gadget into gameplay, but hopes are still high, and will remain so until the first major flop.

Treyarch One Ups Game Industry

Treyarch have announced the multiplayer aspect of COD:BO. There are multiple major changes, but the two biggest are offline “bot” multiplayer, and the introduction of CP or cod points, a type of in game money. The first change will allow players to play offline to get accustom to the multiplayer aspect of the game before they go online. The greatest change is the introduction of CP. CP will be earned by playing through multiplayer and will be used to buy upgrades for your account. Points can also be earned by completing “contracts”, time limited challenges that come in Mercenary(kills and killstreaks), Operations(Cooperative team play), and Specialist(for unique play styles).  In addition, you can wager CP on games, with the top three winners getting the money. The truly epic part of CP? It can’t be bought with real money. Not a problem for true players, but it will stop the douchebags from ruining our games.

New 360 Controller Announced, thousands forget the XBox Live Price Hike!

Microsoft seems to be gearing up for a total reboot of the Xbox 360 this holiday season. First they announced and released the Stealthbox. Next comes the highly anticipated Kinect in November and now this.

Microsoft has gone and changed everything we knew about the lovely controller for their console. The biggest change from the get-go is the color change. Keeping in line with the apparent fighter pilot theme they’ve switched to a silver, grey monochrome color scheme for the whole controller. That’s right, the whole controller. See ya red, blue, yellow and green buttons. Each of them is now a different shade of grey, white or black. Modern Warefare 2 numbers across the world will dip when these babies release.

The next major change that isn’t readily visible but apparently is quite improved is the D-pad. The button has been raised significantly and from all the reviews of early testers it’s much more responsive than it had been before. Now your friend can’t use the excuse that he didn’t have a fight pad when you beat him down in Super Street Fighter 4.

These sleek new controllers will be packaged in a new Play and Charge kit debuting on November 9 for $64.99.

Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta to launch today!

Having deja vu?  You should be.  Here at Gameshoe, we recently published a story saying that the open beta for FFXIV would go live yesterday.  That was incorrect.  However, just like any other time we've ever been wrong about anything, it wasn't our fault.  Square-Enix delayed the beta due to "critical bugs".  Don't worry though, they've assured us that it's going live tonight at 9:00 Pacific Time.  Honestly, this makes me wonder what kind of bugs could be present that would delay the release of an open beta, but wouldn't be immediately fixed following the closed beta.  Oh well, pretty soon we'll all be enjoying Final Fantasy XIV.  And by "we all" I mean "not me" because I have a Mac.
